Subject Guides

Subject Guides curate Library and other research-related resources oriented around prominent disciplines and their sub-topics at Notre Dame.

Subject Guides

Subject guides are a primary way in which Librarians assist patrons in focused research under their subject specialties. All subject guides must serve multiple audiences, running the gamut from undergaduates to more advanced researchers. The best guides will be relatively self-explanatory to any level of user, as well as useful to librarians during their instruction.

There are 2 variants of subject guides:

General
Broad area guides corresponding to research areas at Notre Dame
Specific
Narrower sub-topic guides, further focusing the work of General Subject Guides

GENERAL Subject Guides

Information Architecture

General Subject Guides should take the shape of general research, grouping resources by:

  • Background Information (tertiary sources)
  • Scholarly Articles and Books (secondary sources)
  • Primary Sources (primary resources)

Because they are linked from the Library's Pathfinder pages, GENERAL Subject Guides must adhere to this designated template, ensuring a consistent voice and organized user experience. Variants of this information architecture are possible only with the approval of the LibGuides Management Team and as long as they are structured to embody the shape of research practice in their particular field and serve undergraduate, graduate and faculty audiences.
